When my phone service went "on the fritz" during the second half of July, I was grateful for my many years of meditative practice. Rather than descending into a state of agitation, despair, frustration, or blame as I could not even hear a dial tone for days on end, I savored the unexpected gift of a stay-at-home sabbatical. Without the usual interruptions from phone calls or emails, I appreciated how I could better turn my attention to some projects I had long been meaning to work on, and others that required I make and take time away from phone and internet dialogue... and I had a wonderful time!

There's a lot to be said in favor of recognizing our opportunities to appreciate whatever comes our way. Like a good potluck dinner party, much of what we get out of life depends on what we bring to it. In terms of emotional satisfaction with our lives, our attitude has a good deal more to do with our ultimate success than any other factor. While a person with a negative attitude might give up or get caught up in endless cycles of trauma and drama, someone with a positive attitude can shrug off hardships and difficulties and consistently feel successful in life.

So what is the key to learning to love the lives we are living, even (perhaps especially) when so many things seem far from satisfactory? Recent research studies show that those who practcie the art of focusing their minds to find something to appreciate in whatever experiences and situations come their way are known as "resilient," and enjoy the benefits of reduced cortisol (the so-called "stress hormone"). A reduction in stress tends to ensure these people live happier, more prosperous lives than those who dwell on injustices. As a wise quote from A Course in Miracles states, "I am not the victim of the world I see." I love the gentle way this concept of releasing and letting go of a tendency to fall into the seemingly endless cycle of egocentrism in which a person feels victimized, and then either seeks someone to play the role of rescuer, or becomes aggressively self-protective. As author Melody Brooke points out, it is possible to transition from such unhealthy patterns to a Cycle of Compassion.

I read a wonderful book this month called, Nothing Short of Joy, from which I got the quote at the top of this month's ezine. The author of this book, Julie Bond Genovese, was born a genetic dwarf, which meant she faced a number of challenges in life in addition to all the usual ones. While Julie could at many points in her life become righteously angry, accusatory toward those who treated her unfairly, or escaped into any number of psychologically protective defenses, she instead found a way to find friends and family she could communicate her true feelings to in a way that helped everyone involved transform and grow from the experience.

The funniest thing happened to me the other night! I got home, and I said to myself "I wish it was still early" and I looked at the clock and saw that it said 11:48 pm. I thought, "That's impossible... but awesome! I got my wish!" I went to brush my teeth for five minutes, and when I came back into the bedroom, I saw the clock said 2:00 am, like I knew it really was all along! I realized that maybe I was viewing the past, since I had said, "I wish it WAS still early, instead of 'I wish it were still early.' " I guess I should have taken my grammar teacher more seriously in middle school! D'oh! Anyway, I am trying to choose my words more wisely.

Note from Cynthia: Your story about wishing it was still early so resonates with me! I'm sure I've had the same thing happen to me... more than once, too... yet when it's happened it's been so startling that it almost didn't seem real. In some way, time shifts feel to me the most baffling, especially when time seems as malleable as Silly Putty!

Husband Came Home Before He Came Home

Cynthia talked about her daughter coming home before she came home...after she found the front door open and heard young voices outside.

This has happened to my husband and I several times. I would hear his car pull into the driveway. I would hear the overhead garage door go up. Then I would wait for him to come up stairs. Finally I would go look and he would not be home...but would actually arrive home usually within 30 minutes of that time. We got so used to it happening I would say..Hey..you came home before you came home again!! I honestly never paid attention to what else was happening during one of those episodes. From now on I'll pay attention to see if something 'coincidental' occurs during those times.

I get the full audio...hearing the garage door go up..hearing (at the old house) the inside garage door shut..and waiting to hear him on the stairs...but not! I had thought that perhaps just his desire to be home was causing this phenomena. That's a good question about the audio and the visual. When doing readings I 'hear' and 'see' all the time....often in full color. However, when asked to differentiate between the two...when I am getting info psychically, it IS different. There is no confusion that something is actually happening to me this minute. When hubby does this coming home early thing... it is 100% real in every way.

As far as things disappearing and reappearing in odd places, we moved to this house in our new state exactly a year ago. Everything was unpacked within a few weeks of our arrival. However, there are things that are still yet to be discovered. I truly don't care if they show up on the stove or the kitchen table or on top of the bedroom dresser...just as long as they finally show up!

Note from Cynthia: How amazing that you've so often experienced your husband coming home before he came home in real life! This is the sort of thing that can be so baffling, yet when it occurs more than once, seems to be showing us something. I'd love to know if you have visions that are in any way similar to this, or if the sounds you hear seem different to you than auditory "visions" sound. There is something about this story that reminds me of Rupert Sheldrake's book and work on the subject of Dogs That Know When their Owners Are Coming Home!


Heard Key in the Door Before Anyone Came Home

I have heard the key in the front door, it open and close, wait a couple minutes for someone to go up stairs or down stairs, go look, and there is no one else home but me. It's happened to me a couple of times.

I'm not sure if I can explain this, but I have heard it many times by many people, and it has happened to me more than once. My home office is at the front of the house, window opens and is usually opened at least a crack, and it is next to the front door. With my office door open, I can hear someone come home, and usually am right as to who it is. I live with my husband, my 26 year-old son, my 19 year-old nephew, and my 51 year-old brother so there is always a coming and going. This particular episode I don't recall what I did or what happened during the time of hearing and doing, but I did go downstairs and call out everyone's name. I was home alone. I asked if anyone came home, and went right back out again and everyone said "no." I'm also a believer in ghosts, and tend to blame things like this on the ghost.

Note from Cynthia: In my recent situation (mentioned in the July 2010 RealityShifters), I quickly learned why it was to my advantage to have another twenty minutes home alone, so I could better devote my attention to my friend who phoned me. I am interested to know if these experiences of yours might be akin to visions (the audio kind), or perhaps there have been reasons that you could benefit from those sections of time.

(5) Reality Shifting Q and A / Mail Bag
Hi Cynthia,
Reading your Reality Shifts e-book, I was intrigued to see you saying that, in one of the many parallel universes, you are a man. I wonder about this as wouldn't that mean you were a different person and not *you*? Similarly with the example of Elizabeth Taylor having brown eyes in one universe -- would that essentially make her a different person, as some genetic expressions are not mutually exclusive (if that makes sense), e.g. odd-eyed white cats can be deaf (my brother has a deaf white kitten, not with odd eyes, although another of his cats is white and has one blue eye, one orange eye!); I have Crohn's Disease which in some cases isn't just confined to the digestive system- I had a very painful bout of sacroiliitis last year. I read somewhere that one of the genes for obesity is connected somehow with one of the genes for red hair. Anyway, I have a book, 'Past Lives' by Peter & Elizabeth Renwick. I've always believed in reincarnation and the end chapter of this book talks about morphgenic fields, how no specific location for memory has been found in the brain, and the idea that maybe we reincarnate into parallel universes. I have attached a reading I had done recently about my most recent past life. Ever since I was born (in 1973) I have had a memory of Cornwall. I wonder what your thoughts are on how reincarnation fits into parallel universes.

Thanks so much for writing to me regarding your question after reading my Reality Shifts: When Consciousness Changes the Physical World book! I do tend to mostly think of myself in parallel worlds as being me, having made different choices along the way... but in a very real sense, we are all as One, and I can truly feel a strong sense of that much of the time. It is from this standpoint that I write about the possibility that in a parallel world, I am a man. I also sense that such a man in a parallel world is still very much me, in terms of innermost essence. Part of our spiritual growth is beginning to see that everyone and everything around us is, in a very real sense, ourself. My feeling about reincarnation is that through memories of past possible lives, we can gain insights into issues we may be working through in this lifetime. I sense a tremendous opportunity for us to work with our parallel selves and past lives to bring healing back to those lives we resonate with... through recognizing the beauty and lessons possible even in what might seem to be rather dark situations and experiences. I love the way you are such an avid reader, with such curiosity about parallel worlds, reincarnation and consciousness. There is much research to support the assertion that our minds lie outside our bodies and brains... this is an idea I also discuss with some recent research in my book, "Aura Advantage," which I think you will also enjoy.
