How Good Can it Get?
Sue Larson and Edgar MitchellCynthia Sue Larson with Edgar Mitchell at February 2010 Institute of Noetic Sciences event

Expect Success

"Suddenly from behind the rim of the moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel, a light, delicate sky-blue sphere laced with slow swirling veils of white, rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery. It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth -- home."
- Edgar Mitchell

My neighbor once told me her roofer warned her to "Expect leaks after your new roof is finished," which astonished me at the time, and amuses me still, years later. I laughed at the idea of "expecting leaks," since this seemed along the lines of hearing my mechanic tell me after a car repair to "Expect engine failure," or my doctor post surgery cautioning me to "Expect organ failure." My house's roof needed replacement at that time, yet I chose to maintain a positive vision of a leakless roof replacement, which is exactly what happened. I have noticed that when I expect success, things tend to go better, without so many "leaks" along the way.
Brian Swimme & Cynthia Sue LarsonCynthia Sue Larson with Brian Swimme at February 2010 Institute of Noetic Sciences event

This story about expecting leaks came to mind for me while attending a recent Institute of Noetic Sciences event at the Chabot Science Center. Edgar Mitchell and Brian Swimme mentioned in their presentations the need for humanity to find a new story... a new way of envisioning ourselves involved in a positive way with the future of mankind on Earth. I agree with them completely that we need a new story... and preferably, that new story involves a challenging exploration or journey that helps us get and keep our home planet in order as we learn to live in harmony with the Earth and everything on it. I would dearly love for humanity to fix attention on how we can simultaneously be moving onward and upward while treading more softly on this beautiful Earth. I am certain we can find a dream thrilling enough, to ensure we will succeed, as more of us recognize how much of a difference such a dream can make.

Astronaut Edgar Mitchell spoke with me privately about how amazing it is to him that his grandfather had crossed the United States of America in a covered wagon. Just two generations later, Edgar Mitchell walked on the moon and made it safely back home to Earth on Apollo 14. This was even more amazing, because Edgar's Apollo 14 mission immediately followed the nerve-wrackingly problematic Apollo 13. Thinking about how much change has occurred in just the past hundred years, I can't help but wonder how good things can be for us 100 years from now.

For those of us who can't help but worry, one helpful thing we can do when approaching potential problems is to have a clear goal of preferred outcomes, keeping a vision of success clearly in mind. This is as relevant to global problems as to matters in our own personal lives. Does the very idea of global warming necessitate a sense of forboding doom? Imagine the possibility that temperatures on Earth have always fluctuated, and that global temperatures and weather patterns will achieve an optimal, harmonious balance in the near future. Is the notion of possible 2012 disasters, or economic collapse causing worry? Allow your entire body to fully relax and feel grounded and calm, while imagining that 2012 will be like New Year's Eve, special for its place on the calendar.

We now have a unique chance to imagine new opportunities for mankind in our ever unfolding tale, other than stories of end times, destruction, doom and gloom. When we have explored most all of our planet, and traveled to visit and return from the moon, there is still much we can envision for ourselves that can inspire us to continue evolving, growing, laughing, loving, and enjoying life to the fullest in every way.

Gut Second Brain
Think Twice: How the Gut's "Second Brain" Influences Mood and Well-Being
Scientific American
7 Jan 2010
by Adam Hadhazy
enteric nervous system in our bellies goes far beyond just processing the food we eat. As Olympians go for the gold in Vancouver, even the steeliest are likely to experience that familiar feeling of "butterflies" in the stomach. Underlying this sensation is an often-overlooked network of neurons lining our guts that is so extensive some scientists have nicknamed it our "second brain". A deeper understanding of this mass of neural tissue, filled with important neurotransmitters, is revealing that it does much more than merely handle digestion or inflict the occasional nervous pang. The little brain in our innards, in connection with the big one in our skulls, partly determines our mental state and plays key roles in certain diseases throughout the body.

(4) Your Reality Shift Stories

Vanishing / Reappearing Camera

I thought I would send you the story of my latest reality shift. It was an incident that was really telling of how intertwined the non-substantial world is with the physical, five-sense world. My family drove to Boston during the Christmas-New Years break to see relatives and I stayed behind in New Jersey to make progress on an overdue stained glass window project. I had hoped that they had not taken my camera, as I wanted to photograph my progress. In looking around the house, I was relieved to see the camera underneath a table. I picked it up and moved it next to the front door, as I was going to take it with me later in the car. Later, while driving, I realized that I had forgotten the camera. So I returned to the house to get it and it was not there. Had I left it on the front porch, in the driveway, on top of the car? I searched the basement, and all through the house, many times, as well as the car! No camera. For the next two days I puzzled and felt terrible about the loss of the camera as I couldn't afford to replace it. When my family returned they nonchalantly brought my camera in and placed it on the floor with the rest of their travel luggage. I was relieved and overjoyed to have it back and at the same time suspicious that my non-physical friends were playing with me. The next morning in my meditation I asked one of my non-physical helpers and he said: "Yes you were moving the real camera and case. The importance of the event will become apparent."

Thanks for your continued newsletters. Your optimism is catching and always lift my spirits. It helps make the world more precious.

Note from Cynthia: I love the way this story of your missing camera returning to you gives me the feeling of being cared for... with a message as if from a dream, that even when something valued and cherished seems to be gone, it may yet return to us, unexpectedly. The fact that this very thing has now happened to you might give you a deepening sense of faith and trust in the universe, that you can follow your heart and what you know to be right and true, and all will turn out just fine.

Pyramid Rock
Pyramid Rock
Pyramid Rock Moved 300 Yards
Alaska, USA

I came upon a very interesting phenomenon.... If you are a geologist, scoot closer to your screen. At one long straight stretch in Secret Creek, with deeper, slow moving water, slightly above my ankles this year, and high banks on both sides, an old well known rock stood guard in the middle of the creek, near the upstream end of the straight stretch. It is a prominent rock, about 5 feet in each dimension, with a somewhat pyramid shaped top. It was convenient to easily notice the varying depth of the water by the water marks on the rock. I had heard of it years before I went to Secret Creek the first time. Well, this year I came around the corner to the straight stretch, and had difficulty understanding what I was seeing. There nearby in the middle of the creek at the lower end of the straight stretch, was a large rock, about 5 feet in each dimension, with a somewhat pyramid shaped top. Looking past it, I could see that the rock that was supposed to be up at the upper end of the straight stretch, about 300 yards away, was not there. This was not a small rock. And it was a dense heavy rock. This was a calm water stretch of the creek that never saw swift water. The rock was in the exact same position in the middle of the creek, just 300 yards downstream. Something powerful had moved it. I walked around it. There were no drag marks in the sand bottom of the calm water. I looked up for UFO's. I listened for eerie sounds. I stood still to feel any possible energy anomalies wafting about. Well, things happen. Sometimes they are hard to explain. I trudged onward, walking in the middle of the creek, pulling my kayak, looking over my shoulder on occasion. Well, the grizzly bear could come back upstream. So could the rock.

Note from Cynthia: I love the story about the pyramid rock that moved 300 yards, and am glad that you have photographs showing the rock at the two very different positions you've seen it in the river. This kind of reality shift reminds me times when people have seen buildings or statues move, appear, or disappear... yet it's out in nature in a place that few people will notice that it's in a different place than it used to be. I'm so glad you wrote about your experience with this rock, and that you took before and after pictures, too!

(5) Reality Shifting Q and A / Mail Bag

Dear Ms.Larson,
Thanks for confirming that people seem to die and later are just fine. This has been happening to me for quite a while. I seriously think many of us thought Captain Kangaroo was dead. Larry Hagman, as I recall, died of cancer, liver, I think (no, not Michael Landon,he's actually dead, I think). Your article made Larry seem almost alive again. You alleged he is, in fact alive, so much so that he's still doing celebrity things for charity and the like. Also, I was sure Jane Goodall was dead, but I later thought that I'd mixed her up with Diane Fossey who also had some sort of sociological relationship with gorillas. Don't tell me Diane isn't dead; I don't think I could take that. There is humor in death, I find, though it's harder to see when it strikes close to home. Just in the past month I was talking to my son, and he said, "Dad, he's not dead". I said the hell he isn't; I was incredulous. It is truly that feeling like, "I saw this guys obituary; they don't give those out to just anybody, you know". Whoever the guy was, and I don't remember who it was, I looked him up online and he is, indeed, undead. The incredulity is, because something really struck home that he was dead. It's not like having a long lost uncle come back home when you attended his funeral eight years ago, but several people I would have lost bets on are alive today! It is my near astonishment upon realizing someone I believed to have "shuffled off to Buffalo" yet now is living in Albany, that lets me know and remember that I've had these "misrememberings" in the past. I am relieved that this is not a rare thing. I have a QUESTION FOR YOU, though I certainly understand if you don't have "time" to answer it. You must get a whole lot of mail. No one has been able to tell me why the following is happening to me, so don't feel like the Lone Ranger (yes, dead, too). My wife died of lung cancer on 12/07/2009. Since that time I have been noticing that a day seems like several days; you might think that is normal, but this has a feeling of unreality to it. It is not stress or just missing the most important person I have ever known. There's an almost palpable difference in the way time is passing; I can actually feel it. It seems like six months since my wife was alive. That might be because she was so sick for so long. But, there is a very strange unreality to this entire thing. Of course I miss my wife, but I wonder if this is just "stress" or "grief" as others seem to think. I don't think so. Whatever it is, is it common? Is there a name for it. Psychosis is not a pretty name, I hope you know, so if that's what it is keep it to yourself, please. Actually, in all seriousness, let me know if it is a mental health issue. I'm experiencing prolonged time, I believe. One thing that lends credence to my assertion in my own mind is that I can now read an average 4 to 600 page book in one or two days. Now, I've always been intelligent, but up until recently I read slowly (for example, even when not stressed out, the same-size books formerly took me days if not weeks to read. I really don't want this effect to go away, and I wonder if it will given "time". Your work is fascinating! I'll read what you've written when the opportunity presents itself. What a great subject to be studying in such a unique way! Thanks for your work; I'll look into what you've said even if you don't answer this. I see physicists on the Science Channel or Discovery, etc., all the time. Your subject would really hit home with many many people, I suspect. (No, I don't really "suspect" anyone, there's a comma in that sentence.) You certainly would do a great service, and it would be a wonderful show if you did a program or two about this subject. Sincerely,

Dearest Alan,
Thanks so much for writing to me with such an interesting question, and I send you my deepest most heartfelt condolences on the loss of your wife. I am glad to hear that you've noted the "Alive Again" phenomenon mentioned in the May 2004 and July 2005 issues of RealityShifters.

I love your quip to your son, "I saw the guy's obituary; they don't give those out to just anybody, you know." Yes, I can relate to that exact feeling of shock and surprise upon hearing someone who had been reported dead is now discovered alive again; it's startling and unsettling, to say the least.

I know exactly how you felt about hearing that Jane Goodall had passed away and feeling surprised that she had died so soon after Diane Fossey, since those two were doing such similar work... this is why this particular obituary really grabbed my attention, too. It's easier to take note of famous people who are reported dead and subsequently noticed alive again... and sometimes I wonder how often this same thing is happening to lesser-known individuals who are less likely to be later reported in the news. I also wonder about that lovely quote by Mark Twain, "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" -- whether perhaps people really did think Mark Twain had died because in some reality, he actually had!

Getting to your question about the palpable way time feels different to you after your wife passed away, I find it interesting that you are observing time slowing down in a non-emergency frame of mind. Generally speaking, most people observe a sense of time speeding up as they grow older and more and more connected to this physical world... with a notable exception in event of emergencies that time can seem to slow to a stop. I felt time slow to a stop... twice... when each of my infant daughters fell head-first toward the floor.

There is something known in physics as time dilation, by which the combined speed of an object's motion through space and its motion through time is always equal to the speed of light. When one increases one's speed through space, one can therefore decrease one's speed through time. I heard time slow to a stop as well as felt I was moving much faster than other people around me when I caught my daughter the first time time slowed to a stop for me, as it felt to me that I was moving much more quickly through space and much more slowly through time.

It's been said that emergencies can focus people's minds, as scientists at Baylor college in Houston have theorized while conducting experiments that when a person is frightened, a section of their brain called the amygdala becomes more active, and lays down an extra set of exquisitely detailed memories in addition to those that are usually recorded by the brain... and as that person has more detailed memories of an event, the longer they will believe that event took. There is thus a kind of yogic quality to time dilation, by which one can experience tremendously enriched memories and a sense of more hours in the day by maintaining a quality of seeing everything as completely different and new... thereby utilizing more of one's brain.

A gravitational type of time dilation has been described in which time will seem to be slower for someone who is in closer proximity to a planet that leaves a nice deep impression in the fabric of spacetime than someone who is farther away from the planet. These principles of time dilation are utilized by theoretical physicists in discussions involving space travel, but I find them equally useful in the field of metaphysics, as they help explain why it is that those who spend a great deal of mental time outside their physical bodies, such as newborn babies, very young children, trauma victims, and widows and widowers can experience a sense of time slowing down tremendously.

To put it another way, what might be happening in these cases is that one's mind -- one's consciousness -- is literally not on this Earth to large extent. The resultant lightness one feels brings one into a state of consciousness by which time seems to slow down tremendously. If you like to experience this time dilation effect, you will then be able to continue experiencing it by: (1) maintaining a sense of everything feeling completely different and new every moment of each day, and (2) taking yourself "lightly" (like angels are said to do), keeping your mind "out there" traveling through open space far from Earth's gravitational pull.
Wishing you all the very best,
lots of love,

Way of the Explorer

Way of the Explorer:
An Apollo Astronaut's Journey Through the Material and Mystical Worlds

by Edgar Mitchell
Exploring Invisible Realities

Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1972, as he began a quest for common ground between science and spirit following his life-altering experience of walking on the surface of the moon. Mitchell's autobiographical book THE WAY OF THE EXPLORER describes in thrilling detail his experiences with the Apollo missions, as well as his subsequent exploration of the fields of consciousness and paranormal phenomenon. Mitchell's heart-warming accounts of his feelings as he walked on the moon, and then traveled back through space to see how "the heavens and earth tumbled alternately in and out of view in the small capsule window" are gracefully combined with his insightful observations of the nature of consciousness and reality. We can all benefit from experiencing the Earth as Mitchell does... as one planet interconnected with each and every one of us. I was so moved by what Mitchell wrote about seeing Uri Geller bend spoons and bring lost objects across space and time that it inspired me to see Geller bend one of my (very SOLID stainless steel spoons) in person in October 1999. I love this book's timeless wisdom, beauty, and depth so much that I return to it again and again. It's a powerful book that touches my heart and greatly inspires me!

The Universe is a Green Dragon

The Universe is a Green Dragon:
A Cosmic Creation Story

by Brian Swimme
Refreshing, invigorating view of this enchanted universe

Whenever I read this book I feel like I'm sitting outdoors under the starry night sky by a campfire, listening to two people talk about the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. Within the framework of an imaginary conversation between "Thomas" (based on Thomas Berry) and "Youth" (representing youthful mankind), Brian Swimme's UNIVERSE IS A GREEN DRAGON tells the miraculous story of the vibrant existance of our universe. In masterful storytelling style, Swimme spins a tale so poetic and electrifying that the story inside this book begins to seem much more real than much of the rest of "real life". As Thomas explains to the Youth, "To develop the power of cosmic sensitivity is to understand that to be in reality means dissolving the universe, absorbing it into your new self. To be is to dissolve and draw up, to BE dissolved and drawn up. The universe is a hard yellow candy, to be sucked on and swalled until it dissolves, and, in that moment of dissolution, we emerge. A hardened mind cannot respond to the presence of the moon. The moon's riches cannot be tasted, so the moon can not show itself. The interaction between the rigid person and the universe is superficial, because the sensitivity is dim." I feel invigorated after reading any part of this book... refreshed with a new vision of the true splendour of this enchanted universe.
