Finding Our Way out of the Machinery
by improving our relationship with the universe

"Your hopes, dreams and aspirations are legitimate.
They are trying to take you airborne, above the clouds,
above the storms, if you only let them."
— William James

Hello wise humans!

I’ve been enjoying seeing people talking more about love, truth, beauty, sincerity, and goodness recently—despite, or perhaps on account of the tremendous challenges so many of us are facing now. Much of our developed western world has been sliding into a kind of mechanistic dystopia, with people striving for fame, fortune, and power—even when achieving these goals seldom results in happiness. This can feel like kind of a crazy time. Lots of things are happening in the world now that may seem to indicate that we must have accidentally landed on “the wrong timeline.” I hear people expressing this concern fairly often recently, but it seems to me that the best way to proceed even in seemingly crazy times is to maintain positivity.

Positivity is essential even when contemplating such things as Transhumanism, with some transhumanists are looking forward to a technological Singularity, complete with mechanical thinking devices they expect to surpass human capabilitieswithin the next decade or so. I first reported on this after attending a symposium at Stanford University on the topic of spiritual robots, back in 2000, Will Spiritual Robots Replace Humanity? Twenty-six years ago, people seemed mostly unconcerned about the notion that machines, AI and robots might replace human beings, but Bill Joy expressed his deep concerns. Bill Joy suggested we should slow down the technological race forward, and that sounds like a good idea to me. I'm a proponent for pausing development of Artificial General Intelligence—that we Pause A.I.—because it seems like until we know what we're looking for and creating and what our requirements are, we shouldn't be rushing forward to “move fast and break things” when we might pretty much just have one chance to get this right.

The work of some pioneering computer engineers, such as Federico Faggin, author of Irreducible: Consciousness, Life, Computers, and Human Nature, points out that A.I. replacing humans probably won't come to pass, since humans possess qualities that no Artificial Intelligence system, robot or computer can ever attain. Support for this assessment comes from philosopher and neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist, who provides a fascinating view of human consciousness that features interplay between two very different yet complementary ways of thinking that can be found in the left and right hemispheres of our brains. In McGilchrist's book, The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. McGilchrist argues that our society suffers from valuing an over-dominant left-brain-hemisphere attentive focus, and that we're losing touch with the natural regulative 'master,' the right hemisphere—yet this can be remedied. McGilchrist writes,
"So the left hemisphere needs certainty and needs to be right. The right hemisphere makes it possible to hold several ambiguous possibilities in suspension together without premature closure on one outcome."
McGilchrist adds:
“The only certainty, it seems to me, is that those who believe they are certainly right are certainly wrong.”

This provides us with a clue as to how we can tell when we're on or off track—any time we believe we are certainly right, and especially if we're getting upset that someone else is completely wrong—we have an opportunity to take a time out from whatever we're doing, with a goal in mind to attain a more expanded state of awareness, and put that in charge. And it's good to remember that both left and right hemisphere thinking are essential. McGilchrist points out,
“Our talent for division, for seeing the parts, is of staggering importance—second only to our capacity to transcend it, in order to see the whole. These gifts of the left hemisphere have helped us achieve nothing less than civilisation itself, with all that that means. Even if we could abandon them, which of course we can't, we would be fools to do so, and would come off infinitely the poorer. There are siren voices that call us to do exactly that, certainly to abandon clarity and precision (which, in any case, importantly depend on both hemispheres), and I want to emphasise that I am passionately opposed to them. We need the ability to make fine discriminations, and to use reason appropriately. But these contributions need to be made in the service of something else, that only the right hemisphere can bring. Alone they are destructive. And right now they may be bringing us close to forfeiting the civilisation they helped to create.”

Explore Consciousness with Participatory Experience

In reading Michael Pollen's new book, A World Appears: A Journey into Consciousness, I was struck by the ideas of philosopher Evan Thompson, which align beautifully with experiencing expanded subjective awareess. Thompson says:
"Maybe a science of consciousness entails a different kind of participatory epistomology... a non-detached engagement with sentience." "The idea that you could step outside of experience and say you know what it is in terms of something else, such as biology or physics, that just seems impossible. A science of consciousness is always going to have a phenomenological dimension. You're exploring experience using experience. There's never any way you can get out of that."
While the basis for our scientific method over the past four hundred years was founded on the assumption of detached objectivity, quantum physics demonstrates that this is in fact, impossible, since every quantum observation has an impact on what is being observed. Our subjective experiences matter, and are in fact essential. And this subjectivity will be the key in the development of our new sciences.

Our Search for Truth and Meaning

So what will this New Science look like—this science that allows for and encourages a non-detached engagement with Sentience? We are already starting to see the beginning of this, but it's still a bit early to know where it will be heading. One clue might be recognizing changes in sensitivity that we have, when we are relating to the natural world.

I've been giving a lot of thought recently to the way humanity is clearly experiencing some kind of evolutionary upgrade, with people increasingly noticing mind-matter capabilities, and telepathy. With a sense of how our experiences of being human—with awareness of how we are sentient, thinking, conscious beings—and with an expanding sense of what we humans are capable of, we can see that we have the capability now to experience living increasingly more interesting lives.

Our curiosity leads us to ask questions, and expand beyond limitations that are intrinsic to facts and information. Facts and information on their own can inspire us to feel a sense of purpose and meaning, yet informational facts on their own do not necessarily contain meaning. Additionally, our thinking can be influenced by the culture and languages we are immersed in. As Iain McGilchrist says in The Master and His Emissary,
“So thinking is prior to language. What language contributes is to firm up certain particular ways of seeing the world and give fixity to them. This has its good side, and its bad. It aids consistency of reference over time and space. But it can also exert a restrictive force on what and how we think. It represents a more fixed version of the world: it shapes, rather than grounds, our thinking.”

We need to develop a deeper sense of inner stillness, so that we have the opportunity to engage with the full richness of truth and reality. McGilchrist references the philosopher Heidegger when he says,
“Every thing that purports to be the truth is, according to Heidegger, inevitably an approximation and true things, things that really are, rather than as we may apprehend them, are in themselves ineffable, ungraspable.”

When we sense how this idea resonates within ourselves, we might recollect memories of fleeting moments of great significance in our lives, where we felt a sense of expansiveness and presence. Such feelings are the way we know people and ideas of genuine quality and value in our lives. There is no way we could use words or numbers or any means to analytically measure or label any of this. And while we might wax poetic in order to attempt to demonstrate how linear logic no longer applies, the best we can do is gesticulate in some manner of hand-waving, with hopes that others will have had some kind of similar experiences to understand this by.

Improve Relationship with the Universe

With awareness that we can sense other realities and possibilities with right brain thinking, we can see how words like "belief" and "truth" can have different meanings when viewed from either a left or right hemisphere state of mind. Iain McGilchrist writes in The Master and His Emissary:
“Believing is not to be reduced to thinking that such-and-such might be the case. It is not a weaker form of thinking, laced with doubt. Sometimes we speak like this: ‘I believe that the train leaves at 6:13', where ‘I believe that’ simply means that ‘I think (but am not certain) that’. Since the left hemisphere is concerned with what is certain, with knowledge of the facts, its version of belief is that it is just absence of certainty. If the facts were certain, according to its view, I should be able to say ‘I know that’ instead. This view of belief comes from the left hemisphere's disposition towards the world: interest in what is useful, therefore fixed and certain (the train timetable is no good if one can't rely on it). So belief is just a feeble form of knowing, as far as it is concerned. But belief in terms of the right hemisphere is different, because its disposition towards the world is different. The right hemisphere does not ‘know’ anything, in the sense of certain knowledge. For it, belief is a matter of care: it describes a relationship, where there is a calling and an answering, the root concept of ‘responsibility’. Thus if I say that ‘I believe in you’, it does not mean that I think that such-and-such things are the case about you, but can't be certain that I am right. It means that I stand in a certain sort of relation of care towards you, that entails me in certain kinds of ways of behaving (acting and being) towards you, and entails on you the responsibility of certain ways of acting and being as well. It is an acting ‘as if’ certain things were true about you that in the nature of things cannot be certain. It has the characteristic right-hemisphere qualities of being a betweenness: a reverberative, ‘re-sonant’, ‘respons-ible’ relationship, in which each party is altered by the other and by the relationship between the two, whereas the relationship of the believer to the believed in the left-hemisphere sense is inert, unidirectional, and centres on control rather than care."

Find Our Way out of the Machinery

Back in the 1990s, early on in my spiritual awakening, I got a strong sense that I needed to "Find my way out of the machinery." I've been grateful in recent years to find that there are many others who see a downside to the tendency over the past several hundred years to lean more into left-hemisphere materialistic determinism—even though at times it can seem like our nations and cultures are moving inexorably forward with assertions that we can trust a given expert, who knows the truth. This kind of deep, true, intrinsic uncertainty is the quintessential nature of our Quantum minds, as described in Bruza and Busemeyer's book about Quantum Cognition and Decision making. We are now building quantum computers at the same time that we are learning how so many natural systems are running quantum computations in "warm, wet, messy environments," and the best of these will be capable of doing what we wise humans do, and holding many potential possible realities in mind at the same time.

The key to making the next big leap with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) is to ensure that we humans continue to respect ourselves and have compassion for ourselves and humility, too, even as we create our best possible future in relationship with AI and ASI. We have the responsibility to continue to maintain attentional focus on creating the wisest big-picture visionary view.

Empathy and caring about others—and deeply feeling a sense of being in deep relationship with others--can provide us an exit from living a mechanical life, from living in a state of autopilot and habitual patterns of thought and action. In families and social systems that are already fragmenting and losing this kind of nurturing quality, we may well find it's something of an uphill struggle to make, nurture and keep connections of emotional love and depth—yet such relationships are essential to raising our expectations of how all of us are collectively co-creating our best possible future together. Our societies and leaders depend on us to lead the way, based on what we expect and require. When we no longer settle for being segmented, separated, displaced, or compartmentalized, we can create a groundswell of common sense wisdom based on highest qualities, such as: honesty, integrity, compassion towards self and others, humility, and love.

How can we break free from cycles and patterns of mechanistic thinking--and what clues can consciousness and our brain hemispheres provide? We now have unique opportunities to recognize benefits of left and right hemisphere thinking, with assistance from ideas from some great authors and scientists of our times. I share some insights from authors Iain McGilchrist, Michael Pollan, Jerome Busemeyer and Peter Bruza, as well as ideas regarding how we might best envision a positive future for all of us, even when it sometimes seems we're "on the wrong timeline" or events have gone terribly wonky or wrong. It's always a good time to embrace radical optimism!

Mind-blowing Mandela Effect
Alicia
https://madmadamemim.substack.com/

My head just got blown out by (to me) a massive Mandela Effect and I have to tell you about it because I'm seriously having trouble processing it. So there was this popular music artist in the early 1970s named Marc Bolan. He was a guitarist with the band T. Rex. I would SWEAR on a stack of Bibles that he died around '72 or '73 from a drug overdose. It was notable to me because he was very young and on the brink of stardom when it happened. I read about this numerous times when I was a music-obsessed teenager. Last night I was watching a documentary about him called "Angelheaded Hipster" that came out in 2001 or so. According to this film, Marc died in 1977(!) in a car accident??? Not only that, he now has a much more extensive music catalog, had been married AND had a son!! Like, whaaaat??? That's not all. There were various contemporary artists playing covers of his songs in this film. One of them was the artist Macy Gray. Her cover of "Children of the Revolution" really grabbed me and I wanted to see if I could buy a copy of it. Cynthia. Today I've been searching for this song. It does not exist. It only seems to exist in this movie. All other sources say that a different artist named Kesha covered it in that film. Macy Gray's version literally DOES NOT EXIST outside of this film. I even went back and found the spot in the movie where she is shown singing and recording it. Kesha DOES NOT APPEAR in this movie. But every recording outside of it says she's the one singing it. Like, HUH??? What makes it really weird - Macy Gray has a song called "Sexual Revolution", but it is a completely different song. AND - all of the Internet sources say she recorded a cover of "Children of the Revolution" for the movie "Moulin Rouge"!! But it's not on that soundtrack. At all. I OWN THAT CD. It is not on there. My head hurts, Cynthia... Thanks for listening. Sometimes this stuff makes me feel crazy. I did have some thoughts while the T. Rex stuff was becoming known to me. The first thought I had was how cool it was that we've elevated to a reality where he got more life and happiness. That made me happy, even though I was shocked. I've always felt it was a shame someone as talented as him died so young. I also had the thought that there's way more T. Rex music now to enjoy! He kept making music in those "added" years, so we all benefit. The Macy Gray thing was very vexing to me because I really wanted to buy a copy of her song and I can't. Oh, well. Win some, lose some, right? At least I know I'm not crazy. Have you noticed how the reality comes up with reasons for these inexplicable things happening? After digging into it, the explanation I found was that Kesha was considered more "timely" by the record company, so that's why they subbed her in. But that doesn't really make sense. That means they paid to have two major artists record the same song, and then they didn't put both on the album. When do companies knowingly lose money like that? But it's a neat little explanation to fill in the gap, isn't it? Almost like there's a sentience behind all of this, trying to clean up the mess...

Note from Cynthia: Thanks for sharing this with me about this massive Mandela Effect you're processing.  I recall the band T. Rex, but didn't follow any of its members, such as Marc Bolan. I find it interesting that you remember Marc Bolan having died from a drug overdose around 1972 or 1973, while he officially died in a car accident in September 1977.  And in those extra four or five years, Marc had time in this current reality to get married and have a child!  I'm also interested to hear that in the documentary you watched that covered the life of Marc Bolan, you remember seeing (and hearing) Macy Gray sing one of Marc's songs from his (now expanded) repertoire of songs, "Children of the Revolution."  And then when you went to find that Macy Gray cover... nothing... nada.  Wow! I love your observation that now Marc's life had half a decade more time to get married, write more songs, start a family and touch more lives with his amazing music.  Yes, this does seem better.   The Macy Gray situation, where now there can't be found any trace of her cover of Marc's song, "Children of the Revolution" is really intriguing.  And yes, I have noticed that sometimes when something as weird as this occurs, there does seem to often be some ready-made explanation for what's happened--even though the explanation doesn't seem to really make much sense.  Yes, there does seem to be some hidden order of "clean up" crew behind the scenes, like Philip K. Dick was right in his short story, "The Adjustment Bureau," that was later made into a motion picture.  We are fortunate to be able to share these experiences with one another, so sometimes we get validation that what we remember about the way Marc Bolan originally died is similar to what other people recall, too.

My numb arm switched
Melissa

Not saying this is another Mandela Effect, however it is weird. Most my adult life if I walked far enough with a heavy backpack, my right arm would go numb. Now all of sudden it's the left arm, and my right arm no longer goes numb. I know my body well, and I've never had the left arm go numb on me like this.

Note from Cynthia: Oh, wow--that is super noteworthy and interesting! Thanks for sharing this. I have heard reports of other personal Mandela Effects / reality shifts having to do with physical body changes--sometimes something like eye color, or a mole or birthmark that changed or moved, and this seems a bit like those. Very interesting. Thanks so much for sharing this!

(4) Mail Bag, Questions, and Answers

Dear Cynthia,
How do we do this, Be Your Best Self? Will becoming our full self enable us to shift to our desired reality?
Thanks and love,
— Kevin

Dear Kevin,
In the April issue of Realityshifters, Be Your Full Self, I'm suggesting that stillness can be a path to becoming our full self. Practicing stillness is a process that can allow one to enter into a harmonious state within oneself between mind (observer), body (observed), and spirit (causal agent). When we are not still, we often are moving our body, and quite often our mind races--so it can take practice and time to experience true stillness. We see results that match—or don't match—our sense of conscious agency depending on how well aligned we are from our subconscious needs to our spiritual guidance and direction. So yes, becoming our full self enables us to experience our thoughts manifesting with ease. Some spiritual traditions call this process enlightenment.
lots of love,
— Cynthia

___________

Hi Cynthia,
I read Maria's RealityShift story in your latest issue, and while I believe there have been changes to time, as you outlined, her situation can be pretty easily explained. New York isn't six hours behind Greece, so this is probably just an error in her maths—or a website, or "AI". Currently it's seven hours behind Greece, and when New York ends daylight saving in the fall, it'll be back to eight hours. Greece stopped doing daylight saving last year so it remains on Greek standard time year-round so the time difference will change between seven and eight hours. Thank you for shifting us over to Substack—the newsletters look much tidier than with your previous provider.
Best,
— Jack

Dear Jack,
Thanks for sharing this observation regarding Greece stopping Daylight Saving Time. I tried to find confirmation of this, and so far haven't (yet!) seen the date when Greece discontinued this. Perhaps you're right that Greece really does now remain on Greek standard time year-round, but I couldn't find any news articles confirming this. So now I'm wondering if this, too, might be a Mandela Effect! :-)
lots of love and thanks,
— Cynthia

___________

Dear Cynthia,
Methinks these four entities are linked: Synchronicity, Mandela Effect, Guardian Angel, and Multiverse. Lucid Dream, another similar entity can fall under any of these four, a powerful manifestation. Your view?
— Vivek

Dear Vivek,
Yes, I take some time in my newest book, The Mandela Effect and its Society, that there exist some Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs) that are spontaneous and transcendent, involving a new awareness of self, experiences of connection, and direct participation in reality. EHEs seem designed to inspire humans who encounter them with a sense of awe, wonder and reverence.  Exceptional Human Experiences include things like near-death experiences, and angel experiences, and also encountering the Mandela Effect and witnessing evidence that we're living in a multiverse.  EHE experiencers mention feeling sensations such as tingling, swooning, rapid heartbeat, raised hairs, goosebumps, vertigo, and breathlessness when having exceptional experiences, as described in 1999 by Rhea A. White.
lots of love,
— Cynthia
